Dozens of laboratories and two shared research spaces packed with cutting-edge instruments are among the features of UMD’s new Chemistry Building, which will catalyze the work of scientists pushing the boundaries of their fields.

“It is designed purposefully to enable faculty members and students to share ideas, solve problems and ask new questions about our natural world,” Janice Reutt-Robey, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said at April’s dedication ceremony. “The environmental features of the new building—strict temperature and humidity control, optimal thermal management and regulated airflow—will allow us to push our research to new heights.”

The facility, funded by the state and university, is expected to house research on some of the biggest problems society faces, from infectious diseases and pandemics to climate change.
