# Wet Nose, Full Hearts

The newest addition to the UMD Police Department is a [“facility dog” named Sammy](https://today.umd.edu/new-terp-pup-opens-doors-along-with-hearts). He comes from Canine Companions, a national organization that trains service dogs, and can perform 40 commands, such as “tug” to open drawers or “push” to press a button to open a door with either his nose or paws. Elena Rivello ‘26 pets the 2-year-old Labrador-golden retriever mix as he looks to his handler, Cpl. Bart Brady.
