‘David’s Dream’ Shines

A sculpture dedicated to the late groundbreaking artist, scholar and Distinguished University Professor Emeritus David C. Driskell now stands outside the campus center bearing his name.

“David’s Dream,” by contemporary artist Melvin Edwards (above), features stainless steel disks buttressed by curved legs and encumbered with a massive chain. The 20-foot-tall abstract work was funded by a $790,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and dedicated in April. It makes more visible outdoors the Driskell Center’s work indoors to highlight African American art and artists.
