The University of Maryland celebrated the official inauguration of President Darryll J. Pines in April with a week showcasing innovations, accomplishments and big ambitions for the institution. In his investiture speech, Pines announced five bold initiatives to target campus emissions, honor athletics trailblazers, and enhance diversity, research and the role of the arts. On the lighter side, he posed for photos and rubbed elbows—literally—with students at “Pines on Parade,” an event in which he, wife Sylvia Pines and dog Rocky trekked around campus in a Maryland-themed van to meet Terps sampling the new Maryland Dairy ice cream flavor named for him: TerraPines and Pralines.
