Am I missing something, or would the obvious solution to this problem be to simply lift the ban on the original molecule? The one that's found in natural cannabis and can also be synthesized by any undergraduate chemist? Then there'd be no market for the dangerous variants, right?

I had the same question as the previous commenter. I think the article does a great job of highlighting the danger of these synthetic compounds but completely misses the most important point which is the irony of the existence of these drugs. The US Government, by virtue of it's making a much safer drug (cannabis for example) illegal is driving the demand for these much more dangerous drugs designed to skirt the regulations. Instead of chasing and trying to regulate these hideous compounds, if our Government would just focus attention on regulating the safe production and distribution of a drug (known to be safer than alcohol and nicotine), these dangerous synthetic drugs would be instantly obsolete.
